The Wii is a seventh generation gaming console; however, no console can really make it to the top without its list of classics in its repertoire. Nintendo has done just that for the Wii. They have converted those old, beloved classic games for the Wii to enable gamers who want a blast from the past to be able to experience the games of yesteryears on their new console. This is in line with Nintendo’s goal of creating what may be the greatest video game archive in history, in addition to the new titles that they are constantly adding to their list. To be able to play these classic games, however, an additional controller, the Classic Controller or the GCN Controller, may be needed for you to play these games.
These Classic Games have been taken from other older consoles of Nintendo, like the SNES or Super Nintendo Entertainment System and its predecessor, the NES, the Nintendo Entertainment System. Some games have also been culled from their older brother, the N64. Some of these games even come from other consoles like the Sega Genesis and the TurboGrafx-16. Although the GCN controller and even the Wii remote can be used to play these games, the Classic Controller is the most compatible for usage with these classics.
Among the classic titles available for the Wii, some of the more famous include the undying Super Mario World and Streetfighter II of the SNES. Super Mario is the quintessential adventure game that has you stomping on enemies and saving the princess at the end of each level. Streetfighter is the fighting game that spawned the movie starring Jean Claude Van-Damme and Ming Na Wen, to name a few, in the guise of the characters Guile and Chun-Li, respectively. They battle their enemies with their signature fighting moves familiar to SNES enthusiasts. Other titles from the SNES include Sim City, Super Castlevania IV and Contra III: The Alien Wars. For the NES, the predecessor of the SNES, they have the sports games Baseball, Ice Hockey and Soccer as well as the unforgettable Donkey Kong Series, the space game Gradius and the original adventure classics, Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda. From N64, they have Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario 64. There is also the popular Altered Beast from Sega Genesis along with the console’s mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, to name a couple. Columns and Ecco the Dolphin games from Sega Genesis are also available for all those Sega classic games enthusiasts. As for the lineup from the TurboGrafx-16, they’ve included Dungeon Explorer and Military Madness.
With these familiar yet extremely unforgettable games available on the Wii, old-school gamers will surely have a blast reliving the good old days on a new level. The list of old-time favorites does not end there though. Nintendo is constantly coming up with new “old” titles to add to the roster, thereby adding more reasons for gamers to keep on playing and reminiscing about the good old days of the games gone by.
