In 2001, Nintendo first conceived of the idea after releasing GameCube. Shigeru Miyamoto, the ambidextrous creator of several Nintendo games and now general director of the same company, said the Nintendo Wii Console is designed to focus on a new variety of interaction among players.

After two years, a team of excellent engineers were pooled together to develop the concept. Hence, by 2005, and interface for the controller had already taken form, but the company didn’t display it during a public showing. They said they needed to do more troubleshooting and showed just the console instead.

Previously known as Revolution, which is its project name, the Wii is the fifth video game produced by Nintendo. As the successor to the GameCube, which was also Nintendo produced, the console intends to attract a broader audience compared to Xbox 360 from Microsoft and PlayStation 3 from Sony. But the three are all competing for the best gaming console of the seventh generation.

The name Wii is pronounced the way we say we.  The name was intended to emphasize that the console is appropriate for everyone. The name can easily be remembered by everyone in the world regardless of the language. Hence, Nintendo decided to use it.

The Wii Remote, a wireless controller, is the distinguishing feature of the console. This can be used as a pointing device which is also able to detect and determine motion in three-dimensional systems. The WiiConnect24, on the other hand, enables the console to receive data over the Internet even in standby mode.

Measuring 157 mm, tall44 mm wide, 215 mm deep vertically, the console is the company’s smallest home unit up to this date. At a weight of 1.2 kg, this is also the most light among the three seventh-generation consoles.

The system is designed to support wireless connectivity with Nintendo DS.  Such connectivity will enable the player to employ functions of the Nintendo DS’ touch screen and microphone as inputs in their Wii games.  For online connectivity, the Wii unit is capable of connecting to the Internet via its built-in Wi-Fi of 802.11b/g, a feature which will enable the players to access the company’s established Wi-Fi connection services. No fees are charged for this connection despite its advantage of giving the players the chance to connect to each other. The Wii Message Board, a console-based software, alerts registered users about new games that have been recently purchased. Other services provided by such connectivity include Internet Channel, News Channel, Virtual Console, and WiiConnect24. Local wireless players on various television sets will then be able to communicate through a wireless self-generated local area network.

The Nintendo Wii Console boasts of its parental control features that prohibit younger players from playing some games that may prove unsuitable for them. When an adult Virtual or Wii game is tried to be opened and played, the control will go through the content rating in the game’s data and will not be loaded without a password once it shows that the rating is far greater than the system’s set age level.

With such interesting features, everybody would definitely love getting their hands on the Nintendo Wii Console.
